Frequently Asked Questions

We started Primal Pastures because we couldn't find what we were looking for in the grocery store: truly pasture-raised, corn- and soy-free meat raised the way nature intended.

Transparency is the future of food, so nothing here is off-limits. No question is a bad question — and if you don't see yours below, reach out anytime at info@primalpastures.com.

The Farm, Feed, and Animals

  • Here’s the uncomfortable truth: most “organic” food doesn’t meet our standards… or yours. Certifications set a baseline. Our practices go much further — restoring soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. From our grass-fed and grass-finished cattle to our 100% corn- and soy-free chicken, every product reflects our unwavering commitment to nutrient density and ethical farming.

It goes so far beyond the label that we built our own measure: The Primal Standard. It’s our consistent commitment to food that’s truly worthy of your table.

There’s nothing comparable out there besides raising your own. (And if you do, let us know. We’d love that.)

  • The Farm on Washington — our 30-acre regenerative u-pick farm in Murrieta, CA — is certified organic. For our Primal Pastures meats, we deliberately choose not to pursue organic certification because our standards already go far beyond what the label requires.

Organic certification boils down to three things: no antibiotics, no GMOs, and organic feed. That's not our standard — that's our baseline. Certification is also prohibitively expensive and paperwork-heavy, which favors large industrial organic operations over small farms like ours.

We've built our entire operation around mimicking nature: rotational grazing, no confinement, no corn, no grain finishing, no chemical inputs on our pastures, and regenerative practices that build soil and capture carbon. We'd rather invest those certification dollars back into our animals and our land.

  • Our chickens live on pasture every day, all day, morning to night. They eat grass, seeds, bugs, and worms, supplemented with a certified organic, corn-free, soy-free, non-GMO feed made of organic milo, barley, peas, fishmeal, and olive oil. It's a low-PUFA blend that's different from even the most revered farms in the country.

  • Our chickens live 24/7 outside on pasture. That's not true for 99.9999% of chickens in the USA, even free-range and organic birds spend the vast majority of their lives indoors. We rotate our birds onto fresh pasture daily, which eliminates the need for drugs, antibiotics, or vaccines, and puts manure exactly where it belongs: back into the soil.

  • Our pork and poultry are raised completely vaccine-free. Our cattle and sheep receive birth vaccinations against serious diseases like blackleg and other environmental pathogens specific to their living areas. We never use mRNA vaccines.

  • Absolutely not. Our chicken is processed with a hydrogen peroxide and vinegar rinse, never the chlorine bath that's standard in conventional processing, and then immediately flash-frozen to lock in quality.

  • Yes. Our cattle are 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, raised on pristine pasture with constant rotation, and never given hormones, antibiotics, or grain.

  • Our home base is in Southern California, and we partner with a small network of like-minded farms that meet The Primal Standard to keep our farm shop stocked. Every partner farm follows the same uncompromising practices we follow ourselves. Learn more here.

  • Yes, we love nothing more than having people out to see how their food is grown and taste the deliciousness of regenerative agriculture firsthand. Visit our Farm page for details. Note: because we partner with multiple farms to fill our shop, you may not see every type of product or animal being raised on the farm you visit.

  • We were inspired by the greats — Joel Salatin, Allan Savory, Greg Judy, and many others — and it's our highest honor to inspire the next wave of farmers. When we were starting out, Pastured Poultry Profits by Joel Salatin was our bible. We'd also recommend the American Pastured Poultry Producers Association (APPPA) as a fantastic resource.

  • Yes. Every box is packed with recyclable insulated liners and dry ice calculated specifically for your address to ensure your meat arrives perfectly frozen. It's very common — and totally fine — for the dry ice to have dissipated by the time the box reaches you. As long as the meat is still cold to the touch, your order is in great shape.

  • As long as the meat is cold to the touch, the products have not been compromised and can be safely refrozen or cooked. If any items arrive warm, please email info@primalpastures.com within two business days and we'll make it right.

  • We trust FedEx and UPS with all of our orders. You'll receive three confirmations: one when your order is placed, one when it's being packed, and one when it's picked up by the carrier. Packages are left without a signature and can be delivered as late as 8 p.m.

  • Unfortunately, no. P.O. box addresses cannot be accepted for our shipments because of the cold-chain requirements.

  • We're not responsible for incorrect or incomplete addresses entered at checkout, so please double-check before placing your order. If you spot an error right after ordering, email us immediately and we'll do our best to help.

  • Reach out to info@primalpastures.com as soon as possible. We'll do our best to accommodate you, but if your order has already been processed and packaged, changes may not be possible.

  • Because of order volume and changing inventory, we're unable to hold shipments. If you have an emergency, email info@primalpastures.com and we'll do our best to help.

  • Please reach out within two business days of delivery and we'll take care of you.

Products, Storage, Usage

  • Quality is our priority. All of our meat is flash-frozen at the peak of freshness to lock in nutrients and flavor, and shipped to you frozen. Some of our beef is aged for up to two weeks. Please reach out to info@primalpastures.com for more information.

  • For best quality, we recommend using our products within 12 months of receiving them. Properly stored at 0°F or below, they'll keep longer, but flavor and texture are at their peak within the first year.

  • Never. Our meat is exactly what it should be: meat. No fillers, no binders, no preservatives, no synthetic anything.

  • The best method is to thaw in the refrigerator overnight (or for 24–48 hours for larger cuts like a whole chicken or roast). For a quicker thaw, place sealed packages in a bowl of cold water and change the water every 30 minutes.

  • If your meat arrives still cold to the touch and partially thawed, it's safe to refreeze.

  • Pasture-raised meat cooks a little differently than conventional — it's leaner, more flavorful, and rewards a gentler hand. Visit our blog and recipe pages for cooking guides on everything from whole chickens to brisket. And don't toss those bones — pasture-raised carcasses make incredible bone broth and stretch your food dollar even further.
